This selection of illustrations of Edinburgh and surrounding districts has been derived from brightly coloured prints published by Thomas Nelson in 1897.
The original images were prepared using the process of Chromolithography which required numerous lithographic stones, one for each colour.
The incredible level of detail shown in the pictures suggests that the original views were captured on photographic plates.
The final result of this complex process was a collection of prints showing vivid colours and subtle shading far in advance of anything which could be created with the photographic techniques of the time.
